Rootkit

Track 04 · Identity

← Back to Identity

This is what happened inside me.

A rootkit is designed to hide deep inside a system. It gains privileged access, alters what the system can trust, and becomes difficult to detect from within. That made it the right metaphor for intrusive thoughts.

Anxiety does not always feel like an external voice. It can feel like your own reasoning. Once it has established itself, every signal can look suspicious. Is this thought mine? Is this fear evidence? Is my mind warning me, or has the warning system itself been compromised?

This song uses paranoia and body-horror imagery to express the experience of not being able to fully trust your internal signals.

Lyrics

Intro

You’re going to feel a little pressure. Nobody mentioned… the signal. The signal.

Verse 1

I signed the form, they dimmed the lights Suction tube and satellite eyes Mask above me counting down Lost the clock… woke underground Tongue keeps finding something new A rough edge where the old me grew Every bite’s another question mark Every heartbeat after dark They tell me healing takes some time Pain is normal. You’ll be fine. But normal never sounded like… static.

Pre-Chorus

They say it’s swelling. Healing nerves. But engineers don’t call it healing… when behavior changes first.

Chorus

THE DENTIST SAID I’D FEEL PRESSURE NOBODY MENTIONED THE SIGNAL Every thought comes back encrypted Like somebody changed the original Digging through my memories Searching every hidden bit Tell me… WHO INSTALLED THE ROOTKIT?

Verse 2

I don’t panic— I investigate. Collect the logs before it’s too late. Correlation isn’t proof But coincidence has perfect aim. Running packet captures on conversations Checking body language for synchronization Every answer sounds rehearsed Every smile feels autogenerated Checking mirrors. Checking clocks. Checking pulse. Checking thoughts. If I can’t trust telemetry— Who the hell wrote these reports? I’ve trusted data… my whole life. But every graph is worthless when the sensor starts to lie.

Chorus

THE DENTIST SAID I’D FEEL PRESSURE NOBODY MENTIONED THE SIGNAL Every heartbeat echoes static Like I’m broadcasting something digital Searching every memory Hashing every little glitch Tell me… WHO INSTALLED THE ROOTKIT?

Post-Chorus

Rootkit. Rootkit.

Bridge

There’s a difference… between paranoia… and intrusion detection. Right? Right?

Verse 3

I’ve spent my life debugging systems Now I’m diffing my own reality Reverse engineering every feeling Trying to prove what’s left of me Every memory fails checksum Every instinct gets dismissed If the hardware never changed… Why does the software feel like this?

Final Chorus

THE DENTIST SAID I’D FEEL PRESSURE NOW I CAN’T ESCAPE THE SIGNAL Maybe nothing’s in my molar Maybe everything’s internal If the hardware’s still untouched Then the malware’s in my head WHO INSTALLED THE ROOTKIT?

Outro

Or… was it… already there? Scan complete… Rootkit detected. Source... Unknown. Unknown.
